Confidence in front of goal costs Albion dear
Posted in Features | By WilkaSo two 0-0 draws in a row against two side we perhaps should be looking to beat and the Seagulls are still in trouble at the wrong end of League One.
Against Rotherham this weekend and Port Vale the weekend before the Seagulls have created good chances to win the games but the strike force have drawn blanks on both occasions leaving the Seagulls just 4 points above the drop zone when a six point haul from the two games wasn’t unrealistic.Â
The only goal the Seagulls have scored in 2007 came in the 1-0 win away to Chesterfield from Joe Gatting. That’s a total of just one goal in seven games.
The club have of course been looking to address this during the January transfer window when they targeted 3 established strikers but failed to sign any of their major targets.
The arrival of Bas Savage on Friday on a free transfer from Gillingham has provided the Seagulls with some much needed power and strength upfront but the former Reading strikers record in front of goal is far from inspiring with just 2 goals in 36 league starts before he arrived at the Withdean.
If the Seagulls are to turn their form around a lot will depend on the likes or Jake Robinson and Dean Cox starting to find the net again. Both players were scoring for fun earlier in the season, but since the Seagulls slump in form they have found their confidence drop and both have missed good chances in recent games.
Not only do the Seagulls strikers need to improve but also the rest of the team haven’t really been chipping in with their fair share of goals.
For instance when was the last time one of the Seagulls back four found the net? It was all the way back in November against Northwich Victoria in the FA Cup first round when Sam Rents opened his account for the senior side with the 7th goal of the game. Before that it was Adam El-Abd who scored a late consolation against Southend in the league cup in mid September.
We may not have played particularly well in the last two games, but we have created enough chances to win both games. With two away games coming up against relegation threatened Brentford and Leyton Orient is massively important that Albion turn this around quickly.
